The Trump administration is reportedly moving to freeze federal family-planning grants to Planned Parenthood and other organizations as a review is undertaken into whether they were complying with President Donald Trump’s executive order barring federal funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
People familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that the freeze could be made public as soon as this week. The groups that would be subject to the freeze were set to receive around $120 million this year from the federal government.
Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, told the outlet, “The Trump-Vance-Musk administration wants to shut down Planned Parenthood health centers by any means necessary, and they’ll end people’s access to birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and more to do it.”
A Department of Health and Human Services spokesman said that the department was reviewing grant recipients to make sure they were complying with executive orders signed by Trump. The department distributes funds under Title X, under which services such as pregnancy testing, sexually transmitted infection services, pregnancy prevention counseling, and other preconception health services at clinics, per HHS.
Title X provides free or discounted services for around four million people per year through around 4,000 clinics nationwide. The $120 million is around half of the money available for Title X for 2025. […]
