(The Post Millennial)—President-elect Donald Trump, set to begin his second term on Monday, reportedly plans to suspend the security clearances of the 51 former intelligence officials who signed a letter suggesting the Hunter Biden laptop story was part of a Russian disinformation campaign. The decision was first reported by Fox News and is part of Trump’s broader efforts to implement reform within the federal intelligence agencies.
In October 2020, the officials released a statement asserting that the New York Post’s reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” The letter, which did not provide new evidence, claimed their experience in national security led them to be “deeply suspicious” of Russia’s alleged involvement in the matter.
After this letter, no evidence came to light proving the claims that the Hunter Biden laptop story was Russian disinformation. However, due to the warnings by intelligence officials at the time, social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook suppressed the story leading up to the 2020 election.
The suspension of security clearances is part of Trump’s broader plan to address what he perceives as corruption within the intelligence community. It also coincides with Trump’s selection of Kash Patel as FBI director.
